Mandatory Vaccinations?

Your curmudgeon weighs in on the unfortunately misguided and misunderstood vaccination debate.  I’ll add links later.

Part 1 – To vaccinate or not

There’s a growing backlash against anti vaxxers, those people who oppose vaccinations and who don’t vaccinate themselves or their kids. This backlash is fueled by an incident at Disney world California which resulted in hundreds experiencing Measles, some seriously. Understandable. However, as an article in the Toronto Star illustrates, the anti-vaxxers have a point – officials and arrogant doctors, school counselors and others run roughshod over people with genuine problems, exerting pressure and the darkness of ignorant answers in equal measure. It looks like vulnerable people are going to be thrown under the bus if recent initiatives in California go through and spread. CBC Cross Country Checkup today examines the issue and if my bet is right about CBC modus operendi, they will talk about measles and avoid Guardasil issue, since they are on the side of Big Pharma and the globalists. Edit: A caller brought it up.

This is unfortunate, doubly so because the debate is driven by ignorance on all sides. The pro vaccine side, officials, industry, big money are guilty of self serving pronouncements that ignore facts I am about to disclose. The anti vaxxers, being unaware of these facts, flounder in a sea of conflicting information and anectotes. Too bad. This can be resolved to everyone’s benefit except big money.

The fact I refer to, the proof that something is rotten in Denmark, is that different jurisdictions have different regimes for vaccinations. I and my kids are lucky residents of Ontario. I don’t recall any of us receiving more than about a half dozen vaccinations, maybe a dozen. I understand however that in many or most US jurisdictions, vaccines are given individually instead of being combined as in Ontario, resulting in a minor receiving two or three DOZEN shots. Think about that. Each of these shots contain adjuvants, stabilizers, preservatives, biocides which contains mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and other ingredients that a few people in the population are sensitive to that are causing the problems as opposed to the vaccine itself. Jeeesh.

Big Pharma uses this confusion by being able to quote Canadian studies showing that vaccines are safe. Anti vaxxers on either side of the border react to the more numerous American horror stories, even though Canadians should logically not worry as much as Americans. Without being clear on the effects of differing regimes, confusion abounds.

Since politics is involved, partisans ignore this subtle difference, to the detriment of those who ARE sensitive, like those unfortunate kids in the article. With the dramatic rise in allergies, ADHD, autoimmune problems, it is clear that what we are doing to the world, the environment, to our food and water are affecting a portion of the population and their ability to withstand vaccinations.

It is also clear that such problems are being used for political purposes, such as by libertarians who gripe about *any* government intrusion into individual choice. Individualism run amok, aided and abetted by tea party movements and corporate entities (think Koch) who benefit from, and lobby for less government.

Our partisan political discourse also feeds this black-white faux debate. Nuance is impossible to obtain when governments get on a bandwagon. The skulduggery behind the scenes in Canada when Gardasil was introduced is mindboggling. Big Pharma knows all the tricks to get their product approved…. and paid for.

The US situation is understandable when one realizes that every procedure earns revenue (read profit) so the incentive is for more needles, rather than safety. In Canada, with the single payer model, there is strong incentive to save costs by combining doses, with safety as an added benefit, intended or not.

I have no grief against vaccination *provided* the issue of allergic reactions is considered beforehand. Public officials, seemingly afraid that any qualification they add to the message will cause mistrust and confusion, are themselves causing mistrust by mocking concerned citizens. Rex Murphy played right along with his Doctor guest. Stop it. And drop your arrogant and Darwinian attitude to the sensitive among us. We have other strengths. We don’t need to be culled from the population.

Instead, develop alternatives, tests and protocols to address sensitivities. Oh but that would cost money and slow the system down.

Having said that, I think many people who express concern may in fact just be selfish because of inconvenience, squeamishness or arrogant libertarianism.  If the Star story is any indication, the actual rate of harm is 1 in many thousands (about 60 out of ‘hundreds of thousands’).  Contraindications for vaccination include cancer treatment, immunocompromised, truly allergic to a vaccine or part of a vaccine (i.e., anaphylaxis to egg).  Such people can only be protected by herd vaccinations.  Therefore its not reasonable for millions to avoid their duty to the ‘herd’.   I cannot support such hypochondriacs.  Go get vaccinated against the major killers of the past – polio, measles, smallpox, etc. Populations can tolerate a few unprotected individuals, (herd effect) those with genuine sensitivities, who then have a responsibility to avoid travel and other risky behavior.

Lets all be sensible and solve this unnecessary dilemma.

Part 2- the Backstory
Some anti vaxxers have a darker concern. Various blogs and conspiracy theories accuse Big Pharma and their globalist buddies of deliberate malfeasance for nefarious purposes, most notably, the reduction of human populations in accordance with United Nation’s Agenda 21. Given all the malfeasance going on such as the subprime debacle, rating agency fraud, revolving doors, corporate takeover of politics, false flag wars (WMD, etc), who can blame them. This is unfortunate since vaccinations have a long and honorable history of preventing scourges of polio, smallpox etc. Noble intentions have been invaded by Big Pharma and the profit machine. A few examples:

  • Military experiments that administered LSD and other drugs to students, inmates, etc.
  • Spread of live infections, inadvertently or deliberately
  • Silence on spread of hormones (from birth control, plastic microballoons, fluoride etc into the environment
  • Official stonewalling on the dangers of vaccinations as described earlier
  • Failure of US authorities to adopt best (and most economical ) practices as described above
  • Hounding of doctors opposed to any official practice (fluoridation, vaccination, approved drugs).
  • Unwillingness to clarify jurisdictional differences as explained above)
  • Industry domination of the GMO debate incl skewed science.  Note this example of ad-hominem attack painting such people as kooks.

So called skeptic/ skeptoid sites that purport to be unbiased observers but who are mostly populated by academics and other purveyors of orthodoxy. The only field that still holds robust debate is the decidedly non scientific field of economics but otherwise, the track to the holy grail of tenure is paved with orthodoxy. Having once inhabited the conventional world, I know how difficult it is to break out of. My fluoridation investigation and the 2008 meltdown cured that, but inhabiting the world where truth is uncertain is not easy.

There is no way this curmudgeon has the wherwithall to untangle many of the items listed and indeed, it is probably not necessary. What is necessary is for voters to become less naive about their choices, especially now that the middle class is being eviscerated, and to gravitate to candidates outside the entrenched system, the parties of the status quo, as Greece has recently done. Big Pharma, Big Medicine, Big Government must be put in their place. The truth must be told. As I have said before, the fastest way to achieve this is to destroy Big Media (MSM) through the simple expedient of cancelling your subscriptions. You’ll save money and your intellectual independence too. See you on the other side

Your vaccinated curmudgeon.

  1. Your understanding of US vaccine schedules is somewhat incorrect. Most districts do use combination vaccines, and most doctors prefer them. However, the anti-vaxxers think that combining shots somehow “overwhelms” the young body. THEY are the ones demanding individual shots, which they want doled out over more time. Many doctors refuse, but some will do it that way because, whatever, at least the kids get vaccinated even if not on schedule.

I can’t speak for the government, but there is no stonewalling by providers over information on side effects. Every patient must be given a VIS (vaccine information statement) which they must sign off on having understood BEFORE each vaccination is administered. Those double-sided sheets list every known common and uncommon side effect, plus links for patients who wish to read the studies backing the science. Providers take the issue of informed consent very seriously, because giving a patient any medicine or treatment without their consent legally constitutes assault.

There’s another confusion about vaccines. They aren’t profitable. Our FDA has to leverage the drug companies desire to get approval for new, profitable drugs by forcing them to promise sufficient supplies of vaccines.

Your long list of bullet-point wrong doings are real problems, but unrelated to the problem of combating misinformation about vaccines. I realize they are among the reasons people don’t trust (your institution here), but coincident facts don’t prove causality, and past misdeeds (the LSD, syphilis etc, experiments) do not predict future behavior.

    • Thanks for the comment, though its too bad its under a pseudonym since it seems well informed. Unfortunately I can’t divulge the the highly placed public health doctor who brought the jurisdictional issue to my attention, and there’s still enough leeway in your observation for much misunderstanding to develop.

I’m glad to hear that govt is still able to strong-arm Big Pharma but that is only one part of the profit/ incentive picture.

I think we agree that once trust disappears… oh what a tangled web we weave, causality correlations notwithstanding. I’ll need more time than I have left to restore my trust in the system though it would be nice to see even one firm step in the right direction.

      • I apologize for the pseudonym, but I had a past career on TV 30 years ago, and using my own name online lead to an unmanageable amount of spam and stalking.
